Snow Ice Cream

We are part of the snowpocalyspe that has hit the US of A.  (So much that our Christmas break is continuing an extra day today...)  A friend sent us this Ice Cream Snow recipe and we made it after dinner last night.  Jude gave it 2 bouncing thumbs up (a sign he really really likes something).  And making it broke our cabin fever for a few minutes!

4 cups of fresh snow
1 cup of milk or cream
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix all ingredients in a bowl and enjoy!

Plenty of snow here to make more tonight!!

What's on your list??

Homemade for Valentine's Day

With Valentine's Day quickly approaching next week, I thought I would share some of our favorite homemade decorations and goodies from years past!

This year the farthest I've gotten is hanging the wreath on the front door.  Oh, and buying a bag of Valentine's M&M's.  I have my priorities!

Favorite Christmas Treats

Talking all about sugar today...one of my favorite food groups!

Every year my sisters, mom, and grandma spend a day baking Christmas cookies.  Clare has always enjoyed the years we have been in town on this day!  Here are some of our family favorites...

OK, now I'm hungry!  Go forth and bake!

Whose Pumpkin is it?

Last year we grew a huge pumpkin vine from one seed.  (I'm - somewhat unsuccessfully - attempting to grow pachysandra in that space this year, so we skipped out on pumpkins.)

Right about this time of year last year when the pumpkins were about the size of softballs I took a nail and lightly scratched the kids' names on them.  Just deep enough to gently break the skin.

Come October when we harvested them, everyone had their very own personalized pumpkin on Halloween!

Favorite Birthday Tradition

Jude was very excited to wake up on his birthday last week to this scene in his room:

It has become a tradition in our family to wake up to lots and lots of balloons in your room on your birthday (usually even in your favorite color)!

And for 97 cents at Walmart, this is an inexpensive and easy (well, maybe not if you get short-winded blowing up 20 or so balloons after the birthday child is asleep for the night) tradition to keep.

This tradition has made some people very happy on past birthdays...

Press Cookie Traditions

One of my favorite family Christmas traditions is making Christmas cookies with my grandma.  For the past 20+ years my grandma, mom, sisters, and I have spent an entire day in December baking lots of Christmas cookies.

When I'm in town with my kids on baking day, there are four generations making cookies together!

My grandpa gifted my grandma her "press cookie gun" years ago and it has faithfully made dozens of cookies over the years.

This is one of our favorite press cookie recipes that we have made.  Hope you like it, too!

Pressed Shortbread Cookies

1 Pound Butter
1 Cup Powdered Sugar
3 3/4 Sifted Flour
Pinch Salt

Cream butter and sugar.
Add sifted flour and salt.
Use cookie press to form shapes.
Bake in 300 degree oven until golden brown.

PS - Here are some other favorites we like to bake:

Our Advent Traditions

Here are some of our Advent traditions that our kids enjoy that keep help "keep Christ in Christmas" at our house and also give them visual of "how many days until Christmas?"

Lighting the Advent wreath at dinner.  (They have been very good about taking turns as to who gets to blow the candle out each night...so far!)

We have a store-bought banner and today will begin moving the star around the manger scene every day.

I also make a paper chain (similar idea for the one we make for Lent) with Christmas-type activities or "good deed" suggestions for the kids to complete.  (A friend sent me this link and we copied some of their action items for our paper chain.)

(And, yes, if you have an eagle eye I cheated and did not make links on the chain for the days that we will be traveling for my sister's wedding in a few weeks.  Sometimes it's easier to avoid the confusion of extra links...or for me to remember to take the extras off when no one is watching!)
We also put a piece of hay in the manger when we do good deeds or have good behavior, etc.  So on Christmas morning Baby Jesus will have a nice, soft bed.  (The secret here is the my kids LOVE doing this and I can threaten to take a piece of hay OUT of the manger if they are misbehaving and their behavior usually changes very quickly!)

This is a book I picked up at our local Christian bookstore and has been a big hit.  It has a small bible story to read, then several things to find hidden in pictures.  (Similar to an "I Spy" book.)  It's perfect for kids 3 and up.

So those are our tried and true Advent traditions!

Bridal Shower #2

Ellen and I made a quick trip home over the weekend for my older sister's bridal shower.  The theme for Katie's shower went off of her December wedding colors.  Everything looked great!

We did one l-o-n-g table for the guests.

Favors were heart ornaments that my sister Mary Jo made.

 Lovely centerpieces.

Full house.

The menu was chicken salad on croissants, caesar salad, and jell-o pretzel salad.
(Have you ever had jell-o pretzel salad??  So delicious!!!)

Cupcakes for dessert.  (Also on the dessert menu for the wedding day!  We were happy to taste test!)  And hershey kisses, too!

Fun coffee bar that Mary Jo came up with complete with coffee, hot chocolate, flavored cream, whipped cream, candy cane stirs, marshmallows, chocolate shavings, and crushed candy canes.

This is a family bridal shower tradition I'll have to share in detail sometime.  We make the bride a book from magazine pictures with sentimental - or usually funny - comments.

(Can you tell she's a teacher???)

This page was written by two sisters who shall remain anonymous...just notice she's not looking in my direction...

We are looking forward to the big day!

Happy Birthday Plate

We made these birthday plates (found on Pinterest by our Coordinator) at our MOPS meeting on Wednesday.  They were very easy to make and I know our birthday plate will be a fun tradition for my kids for many years to come!

All you need is a glass dinner plate and paint that can be used on glass and ceramics.

First, draw your picture on the front of the plate with a dry erase marker.  (We traced birthday-themed pictures, like the one found here.)  Next, turn the plate over and paint as you wish.  Let the paint dry for at least 1 hour.  Then, set the plate in a cold oven and let the oven warm to 350 degrees.  Bake for 30 minutes.  Let the plate cool in the oven.  Hand wash or wash on the top rack in the dishwasher.

Clare will be the first one to use our new plate on her birthday in a few weeks!
